Welcome Pastor.  You'll find good people here, all willing to help, with minimal BS.

Since you'll be growing outdoors, you should be able to keep costs to a minimum.  Since you are in CA, clones are available from the dispensaries.  Not living in CA, I don't know their cost.  Seeds are available through European seed banks.  Cost for 5 feminized seeds is generally around $80, depending on the strain.  Non feminized seeds are cheaper.  Beyond the cost of seeds, you'll need some pots and potting soil to get started, and some nutrients for vegetative growth and blooming.  You should be able to get setup and growing for less than $150.

As to what to grow, that's a matter of taste.  There are some sativas, like Arjan's Ultra Haze #1 and #2, that can yield over 3 lbs. per plant.  Indicas, of course, will yield less.  I've gotten yields of 2 lbs. from White Widow and 3 lbs. from Ice growing in full sun in my garden.  Five plants could potentially yield 10 lbs. or more.

I'm an experienced outdoor grower and glad to help in any way I can.

I dig holes, remove about half the topsoil and fill it with composted manure and mix with the top soil.  I also add a teaspoon of Miracle Grow Organic Blood Meal per square foot.  I then use Fox Farms Grow Big added to rain water for feeding during veg and switch to their Tiger Bloom for flowering.  A lot depends on the quality of your topsoil.  You may have to add other amendments such as sand or perlite depending on its composition.   I'm also growing low ryders outdoors in pots.  For them I mix 2 parts MG Organic Garden Soil to 1 part peat humus and 1 1/2 parts sphagnum peat moss.  I also add the blood meal and feed with the same FF nutes.

Having a pH/nutrient meter is a good idea so you can check your levels and adjust accordingly.
