I've never had a problem with rodents but deer and cut worms have gotten some of my plants. For cut worms I mix Triazicide into the soil to kill them. Once the plants get bigger and the stems get very woody cut worms don't seem to bother them. It's available at WalMart. I spray deer repellent on my plants to discourage the deer. Last year they did get one when it was small and later ate the side off of one larger plant. But that way my fault as I didn't reapply it after it had rained. I also urinate around my plants frequently. Human hair spread around the area is also supposed to work well, but I've never personally tried it.

Glad to see you are a member El nino'. If you want to keep deer away from the girls i suggest using predator piss like fox piss and or combination oh male piss that you let sit in a jug at room temp. This will make is stronger and more aromatic, trust me
. Apply the piss 6 feet away from the bottom of the trunk of the plant. So the should a circle of piss around the plants with a diameter of 12 ft. Give or take a few feet. You could also try camoflouged chicken wire, but i have never used this.

I would think hair and piss should be sufficient. And yes, the piss will need to be reapplied after any rain.

Another anti-deer trick I have heard of from the old neighbors I had at my old place up on the mountain is to stake and strand a couple threads of fishing line around as a barrier about deer-chest high since most "deer attacks" on gardens happen at night, they cant see it but feel the lines there so they back off freeked cuz they don't know how to get past this invisible barrier.

some people around here also use that trick. I'll use that, along with hair and pee to keep rabbits and others away

and to the using urine comment..that only works in the woods..if in the city like me and still have animal issues-then pee wont work, they're used to it..they're used to most smells really..
