Growing in the swamp

After growing bag seeds for so many years outdoors, quality and yield have been quite sporadic to understate the case. The set and forget method has been much worse, but I have gotten a few buds from it.
I have been thinking ...if cannabis has survived for so many thousands of years, why can't we have a variety that will grow without much attention? Over the last 40 or so years, mj has been bred for taste and buzz without as much regard for pests and mold tolerance. I would like to be able to add quality genes to some stinky bud variety bringing greater resistance to the common maladies the affect primo bud plants.
So my real question is; which varieties might be most resistant to pests and mold when grown at 26N close to sea level in mostly humid conditions? I guess this would be a good starting point as long as the buds are tasty and potent.
From there I might be able to do some testing and weed out (NPI) the non-performers to eventually come up with something that would work for the lazy guerrilla type grower. It no doubt will be a long road traveled, but the reward seems worth it to me. So you guerrillas out there, what say you? What variety have you neglected and were surprised to find some viable bud when you finally came back? I sure there's a few stoners out there who misplaced a plant or 2 and when finally re-discovered the patch after being lost in the woods for awhile, found some overripe buds leaning towards the ground! Don't tell me I'm the only one!!!

well monkey...cannabis originated in the mountains near afghanland and the Holy Land over there..in that area-theres not many pests, and being in the mountains-its not as hot and im guessing the melting snow helps with watering.check out the 'strain guide' page or go to attitude seeds and check out the characteristics..

Took a little while to find it but Greenhouse Seeds has a strain called A.M.S, Anti Mold Strain. Here's the link: dope-seeds.com/greenhouse.htm. There's also a strain called Big Bad John that is supposed to be self seeding. It's at ganja.co.uk/cannabis-seeds/doggies-nuts-cannabis-seeds/big-bad-john.htm. It's expensive and from a questionable source, so beware. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you. It's probably a question of trial and error. I don't know or haven't read of anyone trying what you are suggesting. If you try it, I'd suggest using feminized seeds. If you aren't going to check up on it to eliminate any males all the females will probably be pollinated, resulting in lower quality buds full of seeds.

Thanks you guys, the link to the AMS is awesome. Muddy, that Alaska Ice looks tempting too! I think I was misunderstood in my post. I learned long ago to sex the plant before placing where they will grow up. I wait till the girl starts showing her little white pubes... AKA pistils... then take them out from under the big oak tree into a more sunny spot. BTW ...adding some fishing worms with loam to the soil has helped them along too. They are cheap too.

i was wondering if you could just add worms to the soil.i dont need to now as ive got the FF soil with worm shit in it..but in regular MG organic i wanted to add a couple red wigglers..you can get them at walmart and anywhere that has fishing stuff.
and..muddy(since experienced with this)If a person wants to pollinate a fem for seeds, whens the latest it should be done? im either going to have white rhinoxcali hash or just wr x another wr...unless its possible to pollenate an easy ryder auto wiith a white rhino,if i can do that id rather cross the easyryder and rhino..

I was considering the Alaska Ice this year until kydentman offered to trade seeds. Originally I had planned to growing it and Train Wreck before I traded for the Super Lemon Haze and K Train. I think Greenhouse Seeds has some of the best strains available right now.

I've been pollinating my girls as soon as they have small buds around the bottom of the plants. With low ryders the males show first and produce their pollen a week or so before the females start to flower. I've got one drying right now that I didn't pollinate until a couple weeks later. I'm curious to see if I get seeds and if they are as mature as the ones I got off the Diesel Ryder and Hindu Kush. On the Diesel Ryders I just pollinated 3-4 small buds at the very bottom of the plant. I've gotten over 100 seeds from 3 plants. About 80 of them are a nice green/brown color and should be viable. The rest were either white or light green and are probably not mature enough to grow.
I intend to use some LR pollen on my full size plants when they start to flower. I'm going to pollinate a branch of the Train Wreck with Diesel, and another one with White Russian. Maybe call those Train Ryder and White Train.
I'll also pollinate the Super Lemon Haze with some Diesel and maybe some AK47 x Blueberry. Maybe call them Lemon Ryder and Fruit Salad.
Anyway, I expect the resulting seeds to be a mixture of full size plants and LRs. The only way to know which is which will be to grow them. It should be apparent within about 6 weeks which are full size and which are LRs. And since they won't be feminized, there will also be males. I'm thinking that quite a few seeds will need to be started in order to weed out the males and full size and end up with some female autos. Say I start 25 seeds and 20 germinate. Of those 20, 10 end up being full size. Of the remaining 10, 5 turn out to be males, leaving 5 auto females. I would then pollinate those females and pay close attention to them, looking for desirable traits. When they are harvested I would keep the seeds seperated from each plant. After I've had a chance to smoke it, I'll know which batch of seeds has the physical traits and smoking qualities I'm looking for. Those would be the ones I'd grow the next year. Makes me want a green house even more. It would be so much easier to do all this in one.

yeah..i shouldnt have read that after smoking, just sounds like an ordeal. Plus, i dont have the proper lighting to see which will be the biggest and strongest, only enough to grow a decent plant for me.im just doing it to have the seeds so i dont have to keep spending money on them.
and also-read where paul stanford outta oregon has a strain called Lemon Pledge that kicked serious ass at the oregon medicinal cannabis cup, but cant find it anywhere..

Sorry Dawg, didn't mean to give such an involved answer. Just that I find the whole process so interesting and like to discuss it with others. If you don't care if the resulting seeds are full size or LRs, then just pollinate a couple buds and you'll have plenty of seeds to grow. I'm averaging about 30 seeds per plant and that's just pollinating 3 or 4 little buds.

whoa whoa whoa...so you're saying i can just pollenate certain buds on a fem??? i was under the impression that if any pollen got on any pistil-it'd pollenate the whole plant and the whole plant would start making seeds...this IS interesting...

Sure, just pollinate the buds that you want. I only did 3 or 4 at the very bottom of the plant. I did find a few seeds on some upper buds where pollen was probably transferred by insects or whatever but that was only 2 or 3. The rest were on the bottom buds. If you go into a room full of women and only screw 1 or 2, they all aren't gonna get knocked up.

Welcome to CHQ. I have a friend who raises bees. For a charge, he will bring his bees to your orchard so they will feed on the fruit flowers and spread the pollen from tree to tree. Only the flowers that receive the transferred pollen will produce fruit. If you had male and female MJ plants, from different strains, the resulting seeds would be a mixture. Some would be all of one strain, some a cross of the different strains. It would depend on where the pollen came from. Even if you had female plants growing outdoors, and someone a mile off had a male plant, there is still the possibility that an insect, or even the wind, could transfer the pollen. Of course in a situation like that not much pollen would be transferred so there wouldn't be that many seeds. I had a male plant outdoors last year which I pulled and threw away as soon as I saw it way a male. I just walked off a ways and threw it in the weeds. I still ended up finding about a dozen seeds on my other 3 girls.

ok-so tell me this-say i had a good size widow fem- and i also had a ak male and a rhino male(hypothetically), would i be able to pollenate part of the fem with the ak and another part with rhino and get 2 different types of seeds??

Yes. You could pollinate a branch with each type of pollen and get different seeds from each. There would be some transfer to other branches by insects or whatever. However, you wouldn't know which branch they came from so wouldn't know what those ones were. I'm planning on pollinating branches on my Super Lemon Haze and Train Wreck with Diesel Ryder and White Russian pollen. I'll grow those next year in the hope of getting some interesting LR crosses.

If you have the pollen already then put some into a small paper bag....go out to your plant...spray a bud with alittle water and then open the bag and place it right over the bud...tie it up for a day and you should be good to go...the water keeps the pollen from flying around too much...find another bud and try some different pollen....BTW those White Rhino cali cross sounds nice....I like growing White Rhino...
stay safe...

I found an artist's paintbrush makes a great pollinator. Spraying with water first is a very good trick if using a mold resistant variety.

Guerrilla growing has been tough this year in the swamp
checked up on the girls and all have been eaten up by bugs etc...
I suppose I'll just have to keep coming back to CHQ and grow vicariously through Y'all. It's fun to read the stories and look at the photos you ppl send in. Someday I'll have to get some pest resistant seeds and try again. With so many ppl running around the Glades looking for cobras, It's a tough year for growing in the swamp anyway.

I wrote cobras.... brain fart or dyslexia... I meant pythons. I've never seen one but more tourists have been out here in the swamp because of them.
